2008-06-08 • An Albatross has rarely – if ever – been spotted in the South of France, but on May 27, 2007 one suddenly appeared on the 12th hole of Royal Mougins Golf Club. It materialized in the form of a tee shot made by long-time Member Danny Laroque, who fired his drive on this 288 meter, dog-leg par-4 straight into the hole for a three under par Albatross. Danny, who plays off a handicap of 4.0, was taking part in the “men- against-women” competition, and after hitting the ball with his driver from the white tee of the 12th , he immediately knew that he had made a good shot. “- I succeeded in fading the ball around the trees in front of the hidden green, and I obviously couldn’t see it land,” he says. “- When the four of us finally approached the green, we could not see my ball, and we started looking for it everywhere. After some time, I decided to give it up and asked my team mates to go on playing. Annoyed with my misfortune, I was tending the flag while one of the others putted, and lifting the pole, I all of a sudden felt some resistance. I looked down into the cup – and I couldn’t believe my eyes! My ball was in the hole – and I had made the first Albatross of my long golfing career!” the 46-year old Frenchman and former Club Captain tells us with a big smile. It is very likely, however, that Danny would have preferred to make his Albatross at another date, because at the end of the day, with 100 champagne-loving players taking part in the competition, Danny’s bill at the Clubhouse bar probably equalled the GNP of a minor African nation… “- But it was worth every cent,” Danny happily says, “- and as I already have three holes- in-one on par-3 holes, and now this one on a par- 4, I am presently preparing to attack the par- 5s…!” Another prominent Member of the Club, Desmond Baum, also has a story to tell regarding recent performances on the course. After many years of golfing at a competitive level, Des finally got his first hole-in-one in June of 2006, when he entered his tee shot on the 17th hole. “- Amazingly, during the eight months that followed, I made an additional two – one more on the 17th and one on the 5th”, Des says, “- and on top of that I have just made an Eagle on the 374 metre par-4, 11th hole, hitting my second shot right into the cup on the elevated green!” Also worth mentioning is Hans Kroon’s amazing Eagle-three on the par-5, 18th hole on June 8, during the first round of this year’s Fortis MeesPierson ProAm. The Club congratulates all three players and is grateful for their positive impact on champagne sales at the Clubhouse bar. (Source: Royal Mougins magazine) |
